    Consumer Education Initiatives and ICPEN Annual Consumer Education Awards

    In June 2021 ICPEN launched its first consumer education initiative. Tips for travel consumers - was developed by the ICPEN Unfair trading practices in travel and tourism digital platforms project working group co-led by Australia and the United Kingdom with contributions from: Belgium, Canada, Chile, Germany, the Netherlands, Peru, USA.

    National Consumer Education initiatives:

    Each year members are asked to nominate national Consumer Education initiatives. Nominations are assessed against the following criteria:

    • the success of the consumer education initiative
    • the strategy used;
    • the results/impact achieved; and
    • creativity and originality.

    During the Annual Conference, members will assess the nominees against the criteria and vote to select a winner.

    2024 Consumer Education Award,
    Gdansk Conference, hosted by 2023/2024 Polish Presidency

    2021 Consumer Education Award,
    Virtual Conference, hosted by 2020/2021 Canadian Presidency

    Winner Category 1 COVID-19 - Korea 

    Korea Consumer Agency with the campaign “Create a reliable consumer environment and provide the necessary information in order to ensure consumer safety amid the COVID-19 pandemic”

    Winner Category 2 Financial inclusion and financial services - New Zealand and Zambia

    New Zealand Commerce Commission with the campaign “Don’t get stung by your loan!”; and Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, Zambia with the campaign “Inter-School Posters on ‘Financial Consumer Protection in the Digital Era’”.

    2020 Consumer Education Award,
    Virtual Conference, hosted by 2019/2020 Colombian Presidency

    Winner Category 1 Sustainable consumption - Mongolia 

    The Authority for Fair competition and consumer protection of Mongolia. The campaign “Child is a consumer” enhances public consumer education by increasing children’s consumer education. The AFCCP of Mongolia worked with teachers, ministries, other agencies, business entities and organisations, and targeted consumers at an early stage to increase consumer education for future citizens.

    Winner Category 2 Guiding consumers in the digital world - Estonia 

    The Consumer Protection and Technical Regulatory Authority (CPTRA), Estonia. Its campaign “Buy wisely. Trade correctly. Also, in E-store.” had as goal to raise awareness among consumers of their rights and obligations regarding e-commerce and provide guidance on how to recognize a trusted e-shop.
