Norway - Airlines mislead consumers with airline «taxes, fees and charges»
In 2009 the Norwegian Consumer Ombudsman has been chairing an EU project with ten participant countries. The purpose was to reveal what is hidden behind what airlines describe as 'taxes, fees and charges' when they promote airline tickets. Results revelaed that there are major discrepancies in how the terms 'taxes, fees and charges' are interpreted by the various airlines. There are also considerable variation in the actual costs companies include in their taxes and charges.
The project ended with a press conference on 3 November 2009 in Oslo where EU consumer commissioner Meglena Kuneva was present. The press conference got excellent press coverage in Norway and was also broadly covered in the press in many other European countries.
